The Floodplain Monitoring System is a system used by HII to apply information technology for surveillance, monitoring, and display of flood inundation situations in floodplain areas — low-lying areas outside riverbanks designated to retain excess floodwater that major rivers (such as the Chao Phraya River) cannot accommodate. Water is generally planned to enter the floodplains after the harvest season to help mitigate flooding in downstream communities and economic areas. This system is therefore a key tool supporting floodplain water management, from monitoring inflow volumes and current inundation levels to draining water out of the floodplains to prepare land for farmers in the next growing season.
